Île du Beurre: the Rhône’s wilder side

At Tupin-et-Semons, a flat trail and observation hides offer a quiet introduction to the Rhône’s side channels, alluvial woodland and wildlife.

A protected natural site

Île du Beurre preserves a glimpse of the Rhône’s natural landscape: side channels, riverbanks and alluvial woodland provide habitat for many species. An association founded in 1988 manages and protects the site while helping visitors understand it.

The area has been protected by a prefectoral biotope order since 1987, updated in 2020. A visit calls for the same care as any outing into a living, fragile environment.

The Beaver Trail

The discovery trail is a flat 2.4-kilometre return walk. Information panels, playful interpretation and observation hides punctuate the route beside the side channels.

The outdoor trail and hides are freely accessible throughout the year. The visitor centre follows seasonal opening hours, so check the two arrangements separately when planning a visit.

Watch without disturbing

The hides make it possible to wait at a respectful distance, but no wildlife sighting can be guaranteed. Quiet voices, binoculars and patience create the best conditions.

Dogs must be kept on a lead. Picking plants, fires, camping and littering are forbidden. The trail is shared with bicycles, with pedestrians retaining priority.

Plan your visit

Check visitor-centre hours, weather and current access before leaving. Accessible facilities are available, but the centre recommends confirming the most suitable route for individual needs. Groups of more than ten should notify the team in advance.
